PRESS RELEASE FROM BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF COUNSELLORS AND PSYCHOTHERAPISTS
With the impending statutory regulation of counselling and psychotherapy, plus financial constraints resulting from the recession, not to mention the general sense of societal insecurity that exists at present, there has never been a more important time for therapists to question their exact role
Defining this sense of identity amongst counsellors working in higher and further education is the subject of the 2009 Annual Conference of the Association for University and College Counselling (AUCC), a Division of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Taking place from 22-25 June at Chichester University, West Sussex, the conference will address many aspects of identity, not only that of those working in the field, but also of their clients and the institutions in which they work.
Jane Nodder, Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster, will present a workshop focusing on the links between eating disorders, nutrition and identity. In the session she will discuss the issues that people with eating disorders have, including their poor sense of self and difficulties in defining their place in the world.
The perceptions, experiences and shifting identities of international students are the focus of a workshop by Alison Barty and Colin Lago. They will highlight that even those students from cultures superficially similar to the perceived ‘British culture' may find their sense of identity unsettled in the transition as they move to the UK to study.
Keynote speakers include:
• Chess Denman - Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge - Emerging personality disorder and problems of identity in young people.
• Dr Andrew Reeves - BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor - The Joy and Pain of Identity.
• Nicola Barden - Head of Counselling at the University of Portsmouth - Who do we think we are? Integrity and identity in times of change.
