PPS stands for Psychologists Protection Society.

It began business in the early 1970’s. The period from 1972 to now is longer than the professional working life of most of our members.

Members consist of professional persons working in the talking and listening therapies.

They include counsellors, psychotherapists, doctors, art, music, drama therapists and similar related groups.

PPS is a mutual, non profit making association run only for the benefit of members.

During the last ten years it has paid only £222,000 (UK) & €24,000 (Ireland) on professional fees (mostly legal fees), and damages on behalf of members. This has been paid from legal assistance funds.

The average annual legal fees have been £25,000 during each of the last ten years – much, much less than had been expected in 1971.

The PPS administration fee is deliberately low. The cost of eleven pounds per member is included in the subscription. Other organizations charge a fixed fee plus a percentage of the premium sent to their insurers.

The subscription income is split three ways between the PPS Legal Assistance Fund, and Insurance Premium and the Administration Fee. The Legal Assistance Fund would be returned to members if PPS were to close for business.

The PPS Legal Assistance Fund currently stands at £700,000. This represents 25 years of reserves at a current rate of spending of £25,000 a year.

During the last year, from 1/7/07 to 31/6/08, we spent only St£9,531 (UK) and nothing in the Republic of Ireland on legal fees and damages.
